Although I've hinted at it in the past, I'm heading to China for the next month or so. My little sister lives outside of Shanghai and I have tons of relatives in southern China (near Guangzhou). My best friend is also coming along. It really is a trip of a lifetime. We're also planning to hit up Tokyo. While I'm dreaming of all the sick shopping in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo, don't worry; we're planning on seeing all the real historical and cultural sites as well...I promise.

I plan on writing and posting while I'm there, but if there's a longer than normal pauses between posts, it's because I'm in Asia, not because I don't love you anymore.

new york state of mind

It's official. I'm heading to New York City for the (capsule) show. From the 19th to 22nd I'll be running around the city taking photos and looking at clothing I can't afford. That and finally meeting a lot of the creative people behind my daily reads. The show will be my first official event as a member of the 'press'. I'm pretty excited. I'm also excited to see the city and all the great shops and restaurants.

Although I probably won't have time to stop in the museums, this trip, I'll probably try and at least force a few moments in at the MOMA. I grabbed this photo on my last trip when my cousin and I squeezed a trip in. I love this guy and Rothko, so I try and see their work in person whenever I can. Remember, no flashes at the museums.

Of course I'm going to go to Chinatown. I can not resist the inexorable force that pulls me towards Mott street. This is my favorite ice cream spot. We found this place when I was in high school. It was the first time I had green tea and red bean ice cream. I was hooked.

Anyone got any suggestions of must-see shops, bites to eat, or hidden treasures? Want to meet up for a drink or a snack? (is it apparent that I like to eat yet?)-drop me a line!

'you're so cool, you're so cool'

True Romance is certainly my favorite Tarantino film. I know he didn't direct it, but it his script. And it is amazing. Just look at the cast in the opening credits. Gary Oldman is a revelation in this film as Drexel. Hans Zimmer's soundtrack is spot on and the opening credit sequence is one of my favorites. Alabama's monologues are perfect bookends for the film. Beat for beat, this is my kind of movie.

I first saw this film in high school. I rocked the elvis sunglasses for a long time after this and still haven't found a girl who lists kung fu and Bruce Lee as turn-ons.

Anyone else going to the (capsule) show in New York? I'm thinking about going and it would be fun to put some faces to blogs and comments. The brand list looks pretty good. Personally I'm looking forward to checking out Garbstore, Post O'eralls, BillyKirk, Our Legacy, and Penfield. Whew. Talk about lions, and tigers, and bears.

Capsule seems to me the most user friendly tradeshow. All you have to do to get in is register online. So if you're thinking about checking out the show or will be in NYC around that time, drop me a line. We can silently check each other's clothes out over coffee or overpriced menswear.

If I ever lived in the Chicago area again it would certainly be on the south side. If it was good enough for Mr. Capone it's good enough for me. (my freshman dorm at chicago was a hotel he used to frequent) I've been a huge prohibition era buff from around 3rd or 4th grade on. I remember my parents took me on a 'mob' tour of chicago and from then on I was hooked. I knew all the hit men from Frank Nitty to Machine gun Kelly. And I always favored Capone's southside crew as opposed to Bugs Moran's northsiders. Who likes a northside hipster? 

I'm headed down to Chicago to visit some family and take care of some business. I lived in Hyde Park for 4 years and am planning on a little photo safari through some of my old haunts. My family lives in Chinatown, so expect lots of food porn.

Everyone's heard of the Life photo archive. It's a great resource and if you've been here before you know I love it too. One of my ultimate favorite online resources though, is the Library of Congress. The digital archives are amazing. You can find images, texts, all kinds of primary sources, for free and most are available for download. I have spent hours here and still am finding inspiration. This is one of my favorite finds:

Published in 1944, Born Free and Equal was Adams' address to the average American. A hope to give a face to what he called the 'broad concepts of American citizenship' and the human impact of the internment order. Largely ignored at the time, I still have yet to see this book get much press.

When I used to think of Ansel Adams, I never thought of portraiture. Now I do.

It's telling that the caption here is 'An American School Girl'. Adams' sensitivity comes through in his photography and his writing.

I only took one English class at university, it was a short fiction class, but we didn't discuss any of Salinger's work. So I was pretty excited when I stumbled across this lecture. I'm quick to poke fun at the uselessness of the internet and television, but then something like this pops up. I promise this will be the last post about Franny and Zooey, maybe. Probably not. An interesting lecture to say the least. Grab some tea and a good snack.

I'm a big fan of a time to get it's a great blog, with great photos and really interesting content. Over my morning tea (I don't really drink tea every morning, but my popo would be proud today) I saw that there's going to be a pine wood derby this summer! 

So being from Detroit, the Motor City, I almost feel obligated to make the trip out to L.A. and race. Although carrying the D on my shoulders probably isn't too great an idea, especially since the last time I even touched one of these cars I was like 9 years old. 

For those of you who don't know, Pine Wood Derbies are the nascar of the Cub Scouts. An annual race where all the packs get together to race their wooden cars. I loved the derby. I still remember working with my dad in the basement, detailing all the technical specs that would make my racer the next mach 5. There's nothing like racing something you built. And like Nick says, the derby is "...the most fun activity that lends itself to betting and shit talking..."

So hopefully I'll see some of you out there?

If you're gonna be around lilac street in San Fran Feb. 14th, you should check out Hamburger Eyes' art sale. I bet you'll get to buy a ton of sweet photos. Hamburger Eyes is a great b&w photography magazine that has featurd some great photogs including estevan oriol, ted pushinsky, and ed templeton. The guys also opened a development center, the photo epicenter, also in San Fran. I've always wanted to check it out. So go and make me jealous.
